LONDON, April 13, 2010 - As the global economy recovers from the worst recession in 60 years, experts at IHS Global Insight's Spring World Economic Outlook Conference, 20-22 April in Rome, look ahead at the prospects for growth for different industries and countries. The conference will explore whether the recent surge in oil prices will stifle the recovery, leading to a double-dip recession; whether China's real estate bubble could be heading toward the globe's next boom-bust; and whether high unemployment in the U.S. will continue to crimp the consumer recovery.
Guest speakers, including Paolo Scaroni, chief executive officer of Eni, S.p.A.; Alessandro Pansa, co-general manager of Finmeccanica; and Ignazio Visco, deputy director general of the Bank of Italy, will focus on how industries, organizations and governments can take advantage of the economic recovery and mitigate their exposure to risk in the short-to-medium term.
The World Economic Outlook Conference, widely considered the leading forum on the direction of the global economy for more than 20 years, will also offer analysis by IHS Global Insight experts, top academics, and industry leaders on the global economic environment.
The keynote speakers and panelists include:
- Paolo Scaroni, chief executive officer of Eni S.p.A., Italy’s largest oil and gas company and the seventh biggest listed oil group in the world, will address the conference on 21 April on "A Look into Energy's Future."
- Alessandro Pansa, chief financial officer and co-general manager of Finmeccanica, one of the globe's largest industrial companies, will also address the conference 21 April.
- Ignazio Visco, deputy director general of the Bank of Italy, "Eurozone at the Economic Crossroads"
- Nariman Behravesh, chief economist at IHS, "The Global Recovery: A Sustainable Path or the Road to Nowhere?"
- Valerie Plagnol, chief strategist at CM-CIC Securities, panelist on "The European Outlook: Short-Term Headwinds and Long-Term Constraints" and "Developed Economies - From Leaders to Laggards"
- Edgard Habib, chief economist at Chevron, panelist on "Middle East: Leaner and Vulnerable"
- Gene Huang, chief economist at FedEx, panelist on "India and China: Booming or Ready for a Bust?"
- Tate Nurkin, director, IHS Jane's, panelist on "Global Redesign, Vortex, and Metamorphosis: Three Visions of the World to 2030"
Issues the conference will explore include:
- How much longer will high unemployment stifle consumer recoveries in Europe and the United States?
- Will troubles in Europe's periphery hurt the core of the Eurozone?
- How far must the de-leveraging process go in the United States before business spending revives fully?
- Is China re-inflating equity and real estate bubbles, sowing the seeds of the next boom-bust?
- Is strong growth in emerging markets enough if the developed markets' paths are muted?
