"Energy Publishing is an excellent strategic fit for IHS. It has a small, but highly regarded reporting team that brings real insight to its products, and it has a strong heritage in the Asia Pacific region,"

IHS Inc. (NYSE: IHS), the leading global source of information and analytics, today announced it has acquired Energy Publishing, a leading provider of North American and Australasian coal intelligence. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

“Energy Publishing is an excellent strategic fit for IHS. It has a small, but highly regarded reporting team that brings real insight to its products, and it has a strong heritage in the Asia Pacific region,” said IHS Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Jerre Stead. “This transaction will strengthen our position in coal intelligence and give us an immediate presence and deep coverage in North American coal markets, complementing our existing global Energy and Power product offerings.”

Energy Publishing includes both Energy Publishing Inc., based in Knoxville, Tenn., and Energy Publishing Pty Ltd., based in Brisbane, Australia. The company produces a variety of newsletters and databases for the U.S. and international coal and energy industries.

The company’s major offerings include the daily market newsletters, Coal & Energy and the international insight publication Inside Coal as well as the weekly Australian Coal Report. These newsletters, and other regional publications, focus on the traded coal markets for coking coal and thermal coal in the international and US domestic arena, providing proprietary content, insight and price data/indices.

The company employs approximately 15 people in its U.S. and Australia offices.

This acquisition, while not material in terms of financial characteristics or revenue, is strategically important for IHS. Additional information will be provided on the company’s previously announced fourth quarter and full year 2012 earnings conference call with senior management on January 8, 2013 at 8:00 a.m. EST.
