"Enterprise Carbon Accounting Systems Enable Business Intelligence..."

IHS (NYSE: IHS), the leading global source of information and analysis, today announced that Senior Director, Environmental Services David Cain and Microsoft Senior Director Environment Sustainability Bill Mitchel will present a session titled “Enterprise Carbon Accounting Systems Enable Business Intelligence” at the Carbon Management for Power Plants 2011 Summit at 2:00 p.m. PDT on Tuesday, June 28, 2011 in San Francisco, Calif.

“We’re pleased to show how executives in the electric utility industry are leveraging information management systems to address changes in the global regulatory landscape around carbon emissions,” said IHS Vice President, EHS & Sustainability Solutions Scott Lockhart.  “Carbon Management for Power Plants 2011 is an excellent venue to network with executives who are facing significant challenges in managing not just carbon, but a broad spectrum of environmental, health and safety (EHS) and sustainability data across their organizations.”

Carbon Management for Power Plants 2011 will feature presentations by more than two dozen industry executives and domain experts who will explain how forward-thinking companies in the electric generation industry are adapting their operations to address complex regulatory and voluntary regulations around carbon emissions, and they will provide practical solutions that enable organizations to meet their goals for both compliance and sustainable growth.

Cain and Mitchel will show how a comprehensive enterprise sustainability management (ESM) strategy enables utility companies to improve their carbon accounting processes. In the era of corporate responsibility and transparency, carbon accounting systems have become part of the financial systems of record.  To reduce risk while maximizing efficiency and accuracy, utility companies must address carbon data management in the context of an overall ESM strategy that ensures auditability, simplifies compliance and drives better decisions.

Cain and Mitchel will also discuss the ESM data management lifecycle, from origination at the asset level to corporate visualization, and decision support — using solutions that best fit the way employees work and think within their organizations.

Cain has more than 30 years of experience in the electric utility and energy sector. At IHS, he is responsible for the functionality and content of the company’s environmental information management solutions and supervised the development of the industry’s first enterprise carbon management solution, which was deployed in 2003.  Today these solutions are being used in major utilities and energy companies worldwide.

Mitchel leads Microsoft’s development of a global strategy to bring energy efficiency and sustainability solutions to the market. He has served in the software and technology business for 20 years.

IHS helps companies in the energy sector meet their carbon management challenges and make better informed business decisions.  For information about IHS EHS & Sustainability products and services, including the IHS GHG & Energy Management Solution, visit www.ihs.com/ehs-sustainability
